Making Sushi

One of our fabulous parent helpers came in this week to show us how to make Korean style sushi, which was very exciting indeed! She demonstrated the different steps involved in making the sushi and explained what all the ingredients were. Perhaps you might also like to have a go at making some at home? We have made a little video clip to help you!
We also got to ask her lots of questions about Korea and found out more interesting facts. You can come and see our poster about Korea in our classroom!

Malaysian Roti

Another one of our wonderful mums came in recently with some Malaysian curry and roti for us to try. They tasted delicious and many children were very eager to try more! While she was visiting, we got the opportunity to ask lots of questions about Malaysia and managed to find out lots of interesting facts about both the country and the food. Pakoras from India

Last week one of our lovely mums came in with some delicious pakoras for us to taste. Pakoras are Indian snacks and the ones we tried were made of bread, flour, water and spices. They had then been fried. We ate them with a little bit of tomato sauce. They had a spicy taste and some of the words that were used to describe them were... AWESOME, YUMMY and DELICIOUS!

Making pizzas

Recently we made some pizzas with Miss Brookshaw. We found out that pizzas come from Italy originally, but nowadays they are eaten all over the world! Here is what we did...

What's in your lunchbox?

This term we are exploring the concept of "Discovery" through discovering what people eat for lunch all around the world. We brainstormed what we know about "lunch" already and Miss Brookshaw wrote down our ideas. She was amazed by all the interesting things we already know! We stuck our ideas onto a SOLO Describe Map. Numbers from 1 to 10 in Maori

As part of Maori Language Week we have been learning how to count to 10 in Maori. We decorated some numbers and recorded our voices saying the numbers. Perhaps you can join in with us?!

Room 18 and 20's Special "Where The Wild Things Are" Assembly

On Friday Rooms 18 and 20 did a special presentation assembly for the rest of the school. It was great because lots of the mums and dads came along too. We had been planning for our assembly and practising for over two weeks, so we were all very excited by the time Friday came! The theme of our assembly was the famous story "Where The Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. Here are some photos from the big event!

 First of all we introduced the assembly.

We acted out the story of "Where the Wild Things are." This is us doing our "What do Wild Things do?" poem.

We even did our own wild rumpus around the hall!

Finally some of us showed our fantastic "Wild Things" pictures and read some descriptions that we had written.

Fish Prints

Over the past couple of weeks we have been working on some fish prints. These took a long time to finish because there were various steps involved!
First we had to create a block out of cardboard. We traced an outline of a fish's body onto card, cut this out and then glued it onto another piece of card. Then we had to add fins, eyes and other details. This is what they looked like:

The next part was messy and we had to wear our art aprons! We had to spread ink all over our fish blocks using a roller. We had to make sure we covered the whole block.

When the ink was on Miss Brookshaw helped us put a piece of paper over the top of the block! We used another dry roller to roll over the top and then peeled the paper off. This is what some of the finished prints look like:

Soon all our beautiful prints will be on display in our classroom for our parents to see!

Jellyfish

We have been finding out about lots of different sea creatures as part of this term's topic "Commotion in the Ocean." One of the creatures we have been learning about are jellyfish. We made some jellyfish of our own out of paper plates! First we painted them, and then we cut out and attached some paper tentacles. Finally we stuck on some googly eyes and spots. You can also see a describe map about jellyfish, as well as a compare map. We talked about the similarities and differences between a jellyfish and a whale!

Mufti Day

Today we had a Mufti Day at school to raise money for Japan following the recent earthquake there. The children dressed up in red and white clothes to match the Japanese flag, and brought in gold coin donations. Here is our class in their lovely red and white outfits!

Our Trip to Kelly Tarltons

Welcome to Room 18's new 2011 class! This term we are learning all about sea creatures and their habitats, so we went on a trip to Kelly Tarltons in Auckland. We made a photo story about our visit and we hope you enjoy it!

Goodbye Room 18 2010

Today was the last day of the school year. All the children will be moving onto their Year 2 classes in 2011. All the best, Room 18 children! You have been amazing! Miss Brookshaw will continue using this blog next year with her new children, so don't forget to check what we have been up to!!!

Fairy Tales in Space

As part of this term's reading programme we have been working in small groups of four children to compose some Space stories. Each group had to pick a traditional tale that we had read last term, and then write a similar story set in Space!!! The children shared their ideas and took it in turns to scribe them in some big books. Then they drew some illustrations to go with their writing. The final step was recording their stories and remembering to use clear voices. We hope you enjoy listening to our work!

Jack and the Hairy Alien Ogre

Can you guess which famous story this was inspired by? "Jack and the Beanstalk" of course!!!

This story was inspired by the Australian traditional tale "Rainbow Bird."

Space Rabbit

Last term we read a North American traditional tale called "How Rabbit stole the Fire." This group decided to write a story which had a rabbit as the main character, and the poor rabbit had had its jewellery stolen by some aliens....

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

This story is of course based on the well known tale "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," but it is set in Space!

Planting Lettuce

We have been talking about how the sun gives us food by helping plants to grow. Mrs Elmore, the Environmental Education teacher and Mrs Bracewell helped us to plant some lettuce. We are going to use our lettuce to make some yummy sandwiches later on this term. Miss Brookshaw did some filming of our planting! Here is a little video of what we did.
